Reviewer's Corner

Gotta Watch 'Em All

Well, just when I thought it was safe to go back to the theatre, Pokémon 3 lands with a thud, and I am forced yet again to come up with some new inventive way of explaining a cartoon that is only really understood by children! The kids don't care that there may be a lesson, in fact the ones who love it the most probably aren't even old enough to know what a lesson is! Good thing this one succeeds where Pokémon 2000 failed. At least there's a little more heart.

The basic plot to the latest Pokémon adventure is about a 5 year old who loses her research scientist daddy to a mysterious ancient Pokémon called the "unknown". When she seeks him out she accidentally frees the imprisoned creatures, which compels them to grant her every wish. When her secret wishes begin to take shape all around her, the town of Greenfield is threatened by the growing mass that is her make believe world. Since it is Pokémon that are helping the little girl, Ash and the gang find themselves going in for the rescue, which insures lots of pocket monster battles.

With every new battle comes a Pokémon we haven't met yet, and of course, a new toy we haven't bought yet. That's ok, these little critters offer some nice, wholesome entertainment for the wee ones, which lately has been a rarity. A little more heart obviously went into the making of Pokémon 3, and parents can rest assured that even if they are clueless about what is going on, their kids will be able to fill them in.

AS A DATE MOVIE
Poor Bet - Unless the daters in question are twelve and under, this one would not be considered a Date Movie.

CHICK FLICK
Poor Bet - Since this one is made strictly with tots in mind, the ladies can leave this off their list of "must-sees" this spring.

GUYS MOVIE
Poor Bet - Even though many guys are into Japanese anime and Japanimation, this one is likely to drive almost any adult male to tears. Not a film men will appreciate, unless they are dads.

CHILDREN
Great Bet - Only the little ones will understand what is happening in this film, and will likely have to fill the grown-ups in most of the time. Children twelve and under are sure to adore Pokémon 3.
TEENAGERS
Poor Bet - This one is sure to be too childish for teens, so chances are if they say they are going to see this film, parents should suspect they might be planning on sneaking into a different one, once they get there!

GENERATION X
Poor Bet - This one is for the kids, so unless the Gen Xers are parents or child-care providers, they won't have any reason to see it.

BABY BOOMERS
Poor Bet - This one is for the kids, but Boomers won't mind sitting through this one as much as the last Pokémon adventure, since there seems to be more work put into it, and the story seems a bit easier to follow.

MATURE AUDIENCES
Poor Bet - Some kid movies have an overall appeal that often works for the grandparents of the world, but this one is likely to turn the seniors off, unless they find the creatures adorable, and their grandkids' delight well worth the price of admission.

INTELLECTUALS
Poor Bet - Avid movie goers should know enough to steer clear of this cartoon for kids, unless they have a secret wish to be a Pokémon trainer.

Violent Acts
Sex and Nudity
Profanity
Tense Scenes
Immoral/Illegal Behavior
Questionable

MOVIE DETAILS:

VIOLENT ACTS
Very Little - This movie has lots of Pokémon battles that wipe out the characters, but never kill them or cause them to bleed or even cry. Characters use energy and light beams, water and fire to battle each other, but it is treated more like a sporting event, then a serious threat. Several characters fall from high places, but never land hard enough to be injured. Large crystal-like formations come stabbing upwards out of the ground in several scenes, sending characters fleeing.

SEX/NUDITY
None -

PROFANITY
None -

TENSE SCENES
Very Little - A dog gives a few characters some problems; several characters feel threatened and must escape another character, which might cause some tension in young viewers. Characters do battle with each other many times; a child's father disappears into thin air.

IMMORAL/ILLEGAL BEHAVIORS
Very Little - A young girl's imagination creates a world which poses a threat to the real world. An imaginary creature attempts to harm others at the little girl's request.

QUESTIONABLE CONTENT / UNHEALTHY BEHAVIORS
None -

Children's Value Rating
A great time for all the kiddies!
